So lets talk about DexCon 10
I plan on exploring some of these ideas further but here is my 10 minute summary...
Next year we have a big vacation planned (like with beaches and dancing and all that normal vacation stuff... thank the Lord we'll be going with gamers). So I won't be hitting the big cons (although I think Joanna is roping me into going to origins). There is no way I am missing Dreamation, Camp Nerdly and DexCon. Five years ago I rolled my eyes at these conventions. I went with my local gaming buddies and sat and played games with them when I could have been doing that at home.
So what do I do now? Let check the score:
Play all the games I love and experience crazy new shit. check.
Hang out with people I love interacting with at and away from the table. check.
All within a stones throw of my home. Not close enough to commute but close enough that I still have things to do when I get home. check.
I played six games this weekend:
Thursday morning I started off with a rocking game of Burning Wheel run by Nick Marshall. It was Rob Bohl, Mel, Matt Webber and myself and a gentleman whose name I missed. Playing with BW vets rocked! I have to admit it was kinda fun when Nick was looking through the Monster Burner he said "WAIT! You're THAT Don?" when coming to my small section of critters.
Thursday night Bill White played Ganakagok. I started off as the Cannibal Ghoul. Cool stuff was afoot.
Friday morning I tried the new game on the block, Fae Noir. It's been a while since I played a traditional game in a traditional manner. It was rough. With no direction other than a GM hoping to sell more copies of the game there were all sorts of interesting behaviors buzzing about the table. More on this later.
Friday night I ran MezzoMecca for new comers to the game.
Saturday morning I was dissappointed my Artesia game, The Wall did not go off so I played D&D with Mel & Bill White. This might have been one of the most fun D&D sessions I have played in years. I clearly supported Luke's statement that I am a gaming terrorist.
Saturday afternoon I got to play Contract Work with a table of five. Although there are a few kinks Russell needs to work out this game is spot on and I can't wait to play a campaign soon.
Saturday night I ran Ganakagok for Ben, Kat, Brian and Lydia with Fred completely rocking the Honk Kong Action theater. We'd been jazzed about the Wire Fu spin on Ganakagok all con long and it delivered.
Sunday, again, my Artesia scenario didn't go off. I was bummed but at least I got to hang out and jaw during one of the two roundtable discussions. I will talk about this a bit later. Let me just say that there should be a game for this sort of thing. Although I think Kat's War Stories probably comes close.
